This year’s Modelling Competition took place today with slightly less entries than last year but with an additional category for dioramas. After setting up the tables for each category entry forms were filled out and the entries placed on the relevant tables for inspection by the expectant throng.
Following due consideration of the various entries the voting slips were completed and returned to the Secretary. Once all the votes had been counted up David G, as our Returning Officer, announced the results in each category. As is customary the first category to be announced was the locomotive category and here Geoff’s Andrew Barclay 0-6-0T came first followed by his ex-LNER Y7 Class. Other locos seen included a BR Class 20 Diesel, a freelance colonial loco and Tim’s Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0T in PLA blue livery.
In the coaching stock category David G’s Midland Clerestory six-wheel coach got the vote over Dave B’s Southern Railway 6-wheel coach. There were rather more entries in the freight category and here Graham’s bogie bolster wagon outscored the rest with Dave B’s Southern Railway birdcage brake van being voted in second place. Other entries included SECR six-wheel brake vans and various open wagons with or without loads.
In the scenic category my Margate Sands train shed wall with associated refreshment room, urinals, parcels office and milk bay came first followed by the signal box that Tim has built for our Lenham layout. Jack had brought along and set up his impressive new micro layout “Conyer Creek Loco Dept.” which he entered in the new diorama category. Our Geoff had entered a diorama featuring an industrial shed scene and John P had put in a smaller diorama of a coal wagon being unloaded. The votes cast put Geoff’s Industrial shed in first place with Jack and John P’s entries tying for second place. As usual David Ho kept us all provided with teas and coffees until we packed our entries away and headed off home. Chris
